Laila Rumsey

I’ve spent most of my life as an academic and a teacher, globetrotting around the world, but only fairly recently did I renew my interest to express myself artistically. I have always been in love with stained glass. It’s something I grew up with, and one of the many things that I love about the ancient places of worship around the world, including mosques, that I have been blessed to visit. After my return to the States, I took advantage of an opportunity that I chanced upon in an online, classified site to try my hand at making my own pieces of stained glass art. That was in 2015. I have found great satisfaction in expressing my love of Allah and my faith through my art. Stained glass art is a true labor of love. It involves a long process of glass choice, precise cutting, grinding, fitting, soldering and polishing. I LOVE working with stained glass, especially the different textures, which is a prominent feature in my creations. Even though I get inspiration from many sources, almost all of my finished creations are my own original designs. Each stained glass piece takes anywhere from 6 hours to several weeks to make, and are made up of anywhere from 20 to over 200 pieces of glass.

“O you who believe, be persistently standing firm for God, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear God; indeed, God is Acquainted with what you do.” (Surat ul-Ma’idah, verse 8)
